    Catherine with her work

Notes from Chile: Catherine Griffiths

Catherine Griffiths, whose show at the Auckland George Street gallery was featured in our June newsletter, was one of 13 artists in Alzheimer, an international exhibition curated by Patricio Vogel, at Centro Cultural de Valparaíso, Chile.

Catherine at exhibition Catherine’s installation memento :: motif explores << memory / loss of memory >> through recording and collecting, with five of the seven Club de Conversation Keyhole rugs in formation on the wall and floor; a film projection, The Jets (2.30'); and The Phone Book, a notebook filled with the collection of Paris phone numbers, placed on a table.

While in Santiago, she gave an interview and talk (the audience had ear-pieces, UN-style) at the University of Architecture and Design, and took part in a panel discussion (with an interpreter) at the gallery in Valparaíso with artists Bárbara Palomino, Pablo Núñez and Patricio Vogel, moderated by Justo Pastor Mellado, director of PCdV. The exhibition dates were extended, and was part of Ch.ACO ’12, Chile’s contemporary art fair.

After the round-the-world drama of getting the rugs and dots to Chile (they arrived one hour before the opening!), Catherine is hoping to have memento :: motif exhibited in a smaller gallery space in Santiago before it goes elsewhere. Watch this space.

Bárbara Palomino, Pablo Núñez, Nury González, Enrique Ramírez, Jorge Cabieses, Yael Rosenblut and Patricio Vogel, all from Chile, with Kang Hyun Wook (South Korea), Catherine Griffiths (New Zealand), Igor Stromajer (Slovenia), María Karantzi (Greece), Eva Christina Meier (Germany), and Francis Naranjo (Spain)
